Trend #1 Car Freight

With state borders closing up across the country for most of 2020, we have seen a significant increase in car freight enquiries on the marketplace. Driven by consumers who are looking to purchase cars from interstate or migrate interstate who have had no choice but to look to car freight providers to move their vehicles.

  • August was the busiest month, with over 3,000 car movements listed.

Trend #2 Mining and Construction Machinery Transport

While state based restrictions and lockdowns have forced many non-essential businesses to slow down or change the way they operate, this is not the case for the vital mining and construction industries. This is reflected in the data, which shows an increase in demand for heavy machinery freight around the country.

The 2020 Stats so far:

  • 2,300 Machinery jobs listed in 2020 to date, at a value of $2.5 million.
  • Large projects in NSW and QLD sees the two north-east states as the most common destination for machinery.
  • March and June saw the most demand for machinery freight, with steady growth over the entire year to date.

Trend #3 Home Delivery has arrived

Reports show that the COVID lockdown has curtailed spending on discretionary categories such as dining out and travel. However the same can not be said for furniture and homewares, with consumers actually buying more household furniture throughout the lockdowns. Coupled with the rise of second hand selling via Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree, a world of opportunities has emerged for eager transport companies.

The 2020 Stats so far:

  • Over 9,000 furniture and household jobs, worth approx. $2.6 millions were listed up until August 2020.
  • A massive 44% increase in jobs for this category compared to 2019 highlights the demand.
  • 828km - the average distance of a furniture shipment; this shows consumers are not just buying locally

Trend #4 Businesses are still shipping in high volume

Manufacturing and consumer goods businesses have seen unprecedented demand throughout the first 8 months of the year, evidenced in a massive increase in palletised and packaged freight.

The 2020 Stats so far:

  • 13,500 palletised and packaged freight jobs worth $4.2 million. This is a 34% increase on 2019
  • Sanitiser and face masks were the most moved items earlier in the year
  • Almost 2,000 jobs in the month of August ranging from sheet metal and bricks to packaged food and clothing

Trend #5 Interstate Transport - Recreational Vehicles

With a lot of people spending their spare time at home surfing the web, this has resulted in a lot of consumers treating themselves to a new or used boat, caravan, motorcycle or trailer. With border restrictions in force, those who would normally consider picking the vehicle up themselves have turned to the hardworking transport industry to get their new toys delivered.
