Summer trucking can be challenging.

During this hot season, it is important that truck drivers establish ways to keep themselves safe. Take time to practice these summer safety tips to significantly reduce a potential road accident and health problems.

1. Hydrate Frequently
High heat and humidity increases perspiration.

  • Always have water handy, including spare bottles in the case of a breakdown.

2. Protect Yourself Against The Sun
Sunlight shining through windows can lead to sunburn and can have a significant impact on someone's health.

  • Use sunscreen, a sun sleeve, window cover, or wear a light long sleeved shirt.

3. Watch Out For Extra Drivers
In the summer months, there are more people on the road than any other season.

  • Stay alert on the road and be aware of what's happening at all times.

4. Keep Tires Properly Inflated
Tire blowouts aren't uncommon in the extreme heat.

  • Be sure that tires are properly inflated before heading out on your journey.

5. Check The Brakes
Hot temperatures can lead to brake fading or the loss of friction when brake component can't absorb the heat.

  • Always check the brakes to make sure they are functioning properly.

6. Protect Your Eyes
Direct sunlight can cause your cause your eyes to become quickly irritated.

  • Use polarised sunglasses with high UV protection to drive during the day.

6. Take Breaks
Driver fatigue is a leading cause of accidents.

  • Plan your route with adequate rest stops to ensure safety on the road.
